The capitol city of Australia is Canberra, the population there is 327,000. The total population for the country is 19,978,100. Aborigines make up about 2% of the population.
Australia has no state religion. The 2001 census identified that 68% of Australians call themselves Christian, 27% callthemselves Roman Catholic, and 21% Anglican. Australians who identify with non-Christian religions number 5%. Weekly attendance at church services is about 1.5 million, about 7.5% of the population.
By far the largest part of Australia is desert or semi-arid. Australia is the driest inhabited continent, the flattest, and has the oldest and least fertile soils. The northern part of the country, with a tropicalclimate, has vegetation consisting of rainforest, woodland, grassland, mangrove swamps, and desert.
Large quantities of minerals and resources are extracted from Australia'ss landscape. These include iron ore, nickel, bauxite/aluminum, copper, gold, silver, uranium, diamonds,opal, zinc, coal, oil, shale, petroleum, and natural gas. Once extracted the raw material is processed into useful products.
